TELL YOUR STORY TODAY

Thanks to all of you who joined us in Topeka for our legislative breakfast - it was a great success!

As you probably know, the Governor has offered a proposal which would combine the Arts Commission and Film Commission into an entity called the Kansas Creative Industries Commission within the Department of Commerce. This Lawrence Journal-World article gives a good explanation of where we currently stand this legislative session.

We are excited that the Governor is beginning to understand that the arts are essential to economic development. However, more work must be done: the $200,000 suggested by the Governor is in no way sufficient to support the important work previously funded by the Kansas Arts Commission. The Citizens are working with legislators to fully fund the public commitment to arts in Kansas.

In order to make this a reality, legislators need to hear your stories. They need to know how the arts have shaped and enriched your life -- and how a loss of funding will impact the programs that your community depends on. Please take a moment to use our advocacy tool and share your story with your legislators.

We are very optimistic that legislators will restore funding for the arts in Kansas, but just like last year, we will need your help in the coming months to make that happen.

GOVERNOR'S BUDGET

Kansas Arts Commission - An important part of Governor Brownback's Roadmap for improving the state's economy is promoting jobs for all Kansans, regardless of where they reside.

Subsequent to the debate on the Kansas Arts Commission last legislative session, the Governor resolved to find a way to address concerns that he was not supportive of the creative arts and their role in the state's economy.

In his FY 2013 budget, the Governor recommends that the Kansas Arts Commission be combined with the Kansas Film Commission to form the Kansas Creative Industries Commission (KCIC). This Commission will reside in the Department of Commerce, and its goal will be to further economic development through promotion and expansion of all creative industries in Kansas. To support this function, the Governor recommends $200,000 from the Economic Development Initiatives Fund.
